Larry Hooker (Occupational Therapy)
In 2008, my daughter, Anna, had surgery for a cochlear implant in her left ear. My wife and I adopted Anna in 2003, and learned that she was born with hearing loss in both ears. We initially tried having her use hearing aids, which we had to pay for out-of-pocket as our insurance from a prior job did not cover them. They helped a little bit, but her hearing was still quite below normal. So last year we decided on having the implants done; the left ear in June and the right ear in November. All we had to pay was a $150 deductible and our Blue Cross Blue Shield medical insurance plan covered the rest. I am happy to report Anna’s hearing is much improved. She is very happy with the implants as she can hear and converse much better with her friends, and is continually showing much improvement at school.

Julie Wells (Diabetes and Nutrition Center)
It was scary enough learning that our child had life-threatening food allergies, but the thought of leaving him in daycare while my husband and I worked was terrifying. Fortunately, my son is at Dandyland, and from the initial discussions, the staff has been interested in being educated about Jackson’s allergies, limitations and treatment. It is reassuring not only to have such convenient access to him during the day, but to know that his “daytime family” has his best interests at heart. Above knowing he is safe, it is apparent that Jackson is having a wonderful time in a loving, creative environment.

Sabina Clement (Non-invasive Cardiology)
When my husband and I were trying to adopt my daughter, Cassandra, from India last year, I wasn’t aware that our hospital provides adoption assistance. My manager, Tanya Rice, mentioned it to me and we contacted Ann Shore in Human Resources for the details. Ann was truly awesome, and said ‘Don’t worry, we’ll take care of everything, and get it done.’ In fact, I’ve had great support from everyone including my colleagues…this hospital is truly a blessing.

Regina Horton (Camellia Place)
This program has helped me in so many ways. When I first came to the Diabetes and Nutrition Center, I felt down about my diabetes because it was really out of control. My parents died from complications of diabetes. I saw them go down all of the bad roads of this disease until it took them away from me. I am determined to do better, day by day. This program has taught me that eating the right foods and at the right times can help me control my blood sugars. Adding exercise helped me lose weight and now I feel good about myself. Before coming to the clinic, I was really in the dark about my diabetes when it came to taking my insulin, the signs of low blood sugar, and the foods that make a diet fail. I really do think differently now. This program was a lifeline for me. I truly thank all of the wonderful people who helped reel me in and put me on the right track.
