EAMC’s cardiology program was named one of the Top 100 in the United States by Solucient (previously known as HCIA-Sachs) in 1999, 2000 and in 2001. EAMC is one of only 20 hospitals nationwide to receive this award all three years, and the only one in Alabama. The department has also received a Distinguished Performer Award from Premier, Inc. for its achievement in the care of open-heart patients, and a Gold Team Showcase Award from the Alabama Quality Award for implementing practices that led to a decrease in the number of infections in diabetic patients undergoing heart surgery.
Our non-invasive cardiology unit performs diagnostic testing. We perform echocardiograms, which are tests that use sound waves to create a moving picture of the heart. The picture is much more detailed than x-ray images and involves no radiation exposure. Types of echocardiograms performed include:
- Transesophageal echo
- Stress echo
- Dobutamine stress echo
We also perform nuclear stress testing. A nuclear stress test is a stress test that performed in combination with a nuclear imaging test, such as SPECT scan.
Our invasive cardiology unit performs diagnostic heart catheterizations to look at coronary arteries, valves, and pump function. This unit also performs percutanious transluminal interventions (formerly known as angioplasty) utilizing balloons, bare metal stents, drug-eluding stents, and atherectomy devices.
We also perform diagnostic arteriograms on different parts of the body utilizing state of the art equipment and devices to correct any problems identified. We implant permanent pacemakers, automatic implantable defibrillators, and biventricular automatic implantable defibrillators.
In addition to our department on the East Alabama Medical Center campus, we have 9 outreach clinics in 5 counties. For more information, call (334) 528-2712.
